Japan-based Mizuho Financial Group has unveiled its plans to launch a service to accept foreign credit cards in its automated teller machines, enabling tourists to withdraw Japanese yen in cash from such machines.
The company will initially offer the new service at some bases from April 2015 with an aim to introduce it on a full scale by the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The new service will benefit the Japan Tourism Agency, which has urged the country’s three megabank groups including Mizuho to loosen up its policies to help out foreigners, by increasing the number of visitors coming to Japan.
Yasuhiro Sato, president of Mizuho Financial Group, said: "Mizuho has to focus on growth in Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states."
Sato added that the company will enhance cooperation with regional banks in such areas as overseas operations, public-private partnership and support for agriculture.
