An IT glitch at HSBC prevented some of its business customers from making payments, in turn preventing thousands of Britons from receiving their wages.

The glitch affected around 275,000 payments made by the companies through the Bacs system, the system used across the UK to process electronic transactions.

As of now, all of the payments held up by the glitch have been processed, said the bank.

HSBC will conduct a review into the matter, which is understood to have been triggered by an error in a file sent to Bacs.

The glitch is not thought to have been caused by a major systems failure or hacking, added the bank.
