Emirates NBD is set to launch voice banking services under an ongoing collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The move will enable the customers to use the Emirates NBD skill for Amazon Alexa to receive banking updates.

It will allow them to interact with an Amazon Echo smart speaker in conversational language to obtain information on account balances and other banking transactions.

Additionally, the customers of Emirates NBD can receive information on new banking products, general programmes and other market updates curated by Emirates NBD CIO.

The service can be accessed through Amazon Alexa enabled headsets or the Amazon Alexa App.

Emirates NBD senior executive vice-president and group head of retail banking and wealth management Suvo Sarkar said: “Emirates NBD has always been at the forefront of banking innovations and Voice Banking is another step in this direction as we utilise new technologies to enhance overall customer experiences.

“Customers are increasingly looking to connect with banks using natural speech as it provides significantly enhanced convenience and our introduction of Voice Banking is a step towards building an AI based conversational ecosystem for our customers across all touch points.”

The Emirates NBD voice banking service uses APIs developed in line with open banking standards.

The UAE-based lender created the service with some selected customers assisting in the development and beta-testing phase.

Recently, Emirates NBD increased its foreign ownership limit to 20% from 5%. The move is aimed at driving foreign investment in the country and diversifying the bank’s investor base.

This July, the bank also completed the acquisition of Turkish lender Denizbank from Russia’s Sberbank.
