Doha Bank, a Qatar-based lender with operations mostly in the Gulf, is considering opening a branch in Kochi, Kerala, The Hindu Business Line has reported.

The bank, which opened its first Indian branch in Mumbai, will mainly cater to the needs of the large non-resident Indian (NRI) population, both in Kerala and the Gulf, via its Kochi branch, said the newspaper report.

At the opening ceremony of the Mumbai branch, Doha Bank chairman Sheikh Fahad Bin Mohammad Bin Jabor Al-Thani said that the bank was following a strategy of international expansion and would soon have its footprint across 15 nations.

The bank had completed the process of taking over the Indian operations of HSBC Bank Oman in March 2014.

Doha Bank, which has a strong presence in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries, is the first Qatari bank to have full-scale operations in India.
