The flop of the
MasterCard branded Kardashian Kard, promoted by the Kardashian
sisters – Kim, Khloe and Kourtney – has resulted in the celebrity
sisters reportedly being sued for $75m damages.
The sisters pulled out
of promoting the prepaid debit card within weeks of the card launch
in November.
Release of the card met
with a hostile reception from sections of the US media;
Consumer Reports, the not-for-profit publication of the US
Consumers Union, was particularly scathing.
Suzanne Martindale,
policy associate for Consumers Union said in a statement: “There’s
nothing glamorous about a prepaid card that comes with a bunch of
hidden fees and other gotchas,” said Suzanne Martindale, policy
associate for Consumers Union.
“Don’t try keeping up
with the Kardashians by falling for this celebrity-hyped prepaid
card. There are more affordable and safer options to managing your
money and paying with plastic.”
The Revenue Resource
Group, the firm which licensed the Kardashians’ images, is seeking
damages of up to $75m as a result of the sisters allegedly reneging
on their two-year deal to promote the prepaid card.
