BBVA has joined the ranks of banks who offer mobile banking apps
with the introduction of a native iPhone and iPod touch app in its
home market.

The Mobile BBVA app will enable users to
transfer money to another person by just using the receiver’s
mobile phone number.

The receive will get a text message with a
code, which they can type into a BBVA ATM in Spain to withdraw the
fund.

BBVA’s introduction of a
payments-enabled m-banking app follows that of Turkish lender
Akbank on 24 May.

The Spanish lender has a share of just under
25% in Akbank’s rival Garanti.

BBVA said that a web-based version of the
mobile banking app would be launched “in the coming months” to be
compatible with other popular smartphones such as RIM’s BlackBerry
and Android handsets.

The web-based version would also be compatible
with Apple’s iPad.

BBVA mobile banking app features include:

  • Account balance views;
  • Money transfers;
  • Blocking cards, and
  • ATM and branch finder.

In addition, the bank launched a free web
portal for access via any smartphone.

BBVA’s US-subsidiary BBVA Compass already
offers mobile banking services.
