One of Greece’s largest four lenders, Alpha Bank, is eyeing up Citibank’s Greek business, according to media reports.

Citibank would be following in the footsteps of other foreign banks such as Credit Agricole and Societe Generale if it withdrew from Greece.

A spokesperson for Alpha said: "In the context of implementing its business plan and acting in the best interest of its shareholders, the bank periodically explores a wide range of options that serve the plan.

"In any event, as is standard practice, the bank will proceed with any requisite announcements."

Citibank declined to comment on media reports that it was selling up to Alpha Bank.

After a wave of consolidation prompted by Greece’s debt crisis, the top four banks were left controlling around 90% of the market.
