Lloyds Bank has been trailing ‘tap to bank’ technology to authenticate devices during mobile banking registration process.
The technology, which has been tested on 125 people, will enable owners of NFC-equipped Android smartphones to set up mobile banking by tapping a debit or credit card against the handset.
The bank said that the new technology could phase out automated security calls and chip and pin readers.
The majority of those people involved in the testing found the new technology to be simpler, quicker, and easier, the bank added.
The bank also plans to extend the application to other tasks, including authenticating new payments.
Lloyds Bank director of innovation and digital development Marc Lien said: "With the widespread take up of contactless cards and most new smartphones now having NFC technology, this tap to bank trial is developing enhancements to banking processes that many people could benefit from.
